About VET Music
Sydney Road Community School offers a VET in Schools Certificate III in Music, which includes units from the Creation and Composition Stream that focus specifically on Electronic Music production and performance.
Our VET Music course runs over 2 years, and is suitable for students in Years 10 - 12 wishing to obtain a Certificate III to contribute towards their VCE and VCE VM. The course is auspiced by COSAMP (RTO 4159) and runs Wednesdays 1.30pm - 5pm.
Our program enables students to apply a broad range of knowledge and skills in varied work contexts within the music industry. This course prepares students for work in the music industry in areas such as composition, critical listening, music management, and music promotions.
Additionally, students undertaking this two year course learn digital music making skills they can utilise in VCE Unit 3 and 4 Music Composition or Music Inquiry.
This course is ideal for senior secondary school students interested in making and performing electronic music - an area of contemporary music that is increasingly relevant for future pathways within the Music Industry.
Student Testimonials
“The skills I learnt and the experience I gained from SRCS’s VET Music Industry subject form the foundation of my work as a live engineer. Matt and Dan always focused on learning to apply the theory we were learning, which I found invaluable and a skill I’ve been able to carry forward. Also, they always encouraged you to do the best work you can. I cannot recommend this enough for anyone interested in pursuing any aspect of music as a career!” – Elizabeth
“This course was a crucial stepping stone for my progression as a music producer, both technically and conceptually. I was always looking forward to classes with Dan and Matt!” - TJ
Our Trainers
Our experienced trainers are active in building creative communities both in and out of the school environment; Dan West (following a ten-year tenure as Arts Centre Melbourne’s Youth Programmer) currently operates the Yarra Youth Services Recording Studio as part of the Rising High music program. Matt Ridgway is an Ableton Certified Trainer who in addition to his work at SRCS, also runs monthly music production workshops. Both Matt and Dan are working musicians and sound designers, with over twenty years experience in the Music Industry. Between them, they have been nominated for ARIA awards, and have won Awards for game sound design.
Our Facilities
All students have the option to access our Mac laptops, Ableton Push 2 Controllers and Audio Interfaces. We utilise these tools and cloud-based technology to facilitate high-level, creative education experience for our students that they are able to access anywhere with an internet connection.
Industry Connection & Sponsorship
We have strong connections to the Ableton for the Classroom Initiative, which has allowed for product sponsorship receiving sixteen refurbished Push Controllers and software licensing for the entire VET Music program. Our trainers have ongoing professional relationships with a number of organisations and companies within the Australian and International music industry that we draw upon.
How this course contributes to your VCE
On successful completion of the VET program, a student achieves the following:
VCE: Students may be eligible to receive recognition of at least two units of credit at the Units 1 & 2 level and a VCE VET Units 3 & 4 sequence.
VCE VM: Successful completion of this program provides the 180 nominal hours per year of VET at Cert II or above that is required for the VCE Vocational Major.
ATAR: This subject does not have a study score and therefore cannot contribute towards the student’s primary four. Where available, a Unit 3 & 4 sequence may be awarded on satisfactory completion of a minimum of 180 nominal hours at AQF level III, according to the guidelines published by VCAA. VTAC may award students who receive a Units 3 & 4 sequence through Block Credit Recognition, an increment.
Not offering the scored assessment is a decision made by the trainers in this course to provide opportunities to deeply explore contemporary practices in electronic music production and performance.
